SRH can build a team around Jason Holder, but need an Indian captain: Lara

SRH might not retain Kane Williamson and David Warner

Brian Lara thinks that SRH can retain Jason Holder and can build a team around him if they want, but it’s important for them to have an Indian captain, rather than an overseas captain.

SRH has been playing under an overseas captain for quite some time now. David Warner has captained the team for a substantial amount of time and in the period where he was suspended, it was Kane Williamson who led the team.

And SRH actually performed very, very well under their overseas captains. They actually won the title in 2016 under Warner and reached the final in 2018 under Williamson before being beaten by CSK in the title race.

SRH will be able to retain very few players ahead of mega auction

However, now with mega auction coming up, SRH will be able to retain very few players and while it’s almost certain that they won’t be retaining Warner, there is a question mark if they will be retaining Williamson or not.

Williamson hasn’t had a great IPL season, while Holder has actually done really well with the ball, apart from playing a few cameos with the bat. And this is the second time in a row where Holder has had an impact for SRH, as he was really useful last season as well, coming in as a replacement player.

According to Lara, there is not much of a shining light for SRH this season, but if there is one player who can be called a bit of a shining light, it’s Jason Holder. He might not be the perfect T20 player, but he is very useful.

“Jason Holder is the shining light in a disastrous season. I’m not sure if he is an out-and-out T20 player, but I feel they can build a team around him,” Lara said.

Apart from Holder, another overseas player who might be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad is Rashid Khan, who is probably the best T20 spinner in the world right now.
