The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League has been a nightmare for the Chennai Super Kings team so far. The defending champions have played four matches in IPL 2022 and lost all of them. Captain Ravindra Jadeja has not been so impressive despite having a decent squad. Ravi Shastri was recently named the perfect replacement for MS Dhoni as CSK captain.
Just a couple of days before the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League, MS Dhoni dropped a bombshell. He stepped down as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings team and handed over the reins of the franchise to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Prior to this season, Jadeja had never captained in IPL or international cricket. He has lost four matches on a trot. Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri recently commented on ESPNCricinfo that instead of Jadeja, CSK could have considered Faf du Plessis as the captain.
“If Dhoni was thinking of giving up the captaincy, then Faf should have been given the job, and Jadeja should have continued as [just] a player. He would have played freely, without the pressure of captaincy. Things could have been different for Chennai then,” said Ravi Shastri.
Ravi Shastri says Faf du Plessis would have been the perfect successor to MS Dhoni
During the ESPNCricinfo T20 Timeout Hindi show after the match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ravi Shastri mentioned that the Chennai Super Kings should have allowed Ravindra Jadeja to play just as an all-rounder in the team because he is at his best when he is a player.
At the same time, Shastri added that if the Chennai Super Kings look back, they may feel Faf would have been a good choice.
“If Chennai were to think back, they wouldn’t have let go of Faf du Plessis,” the former Indian coach concluded.
