The Indian analyst Prasanna, who worked with the South Africa national team for a long period of time, was also a part of the support staff of the Indian U19 team in the 2006 U19 World Cup, and today he shared a conversation between him and Rohit Sharma which transpired during the final match of the 2006 U19 World Cup.
India and Pakistan had qualified to the final, and India managed to bundle Pakistan out for just 109 to make the job easier for them to lift the World Cup trophy. Prasanna said Rohit Sharma came back to the dressing room after the first innings, and he was so confident about India’s chances that he told him they were going to chase the target down in 20 overs only and win the World Cup.
However, as it turned out, the Pakistani medium-pacer Anwar Ali bowled a lethal spell and the whole Indian team actually got bowled out inside 20 overs, rather than chasing the target in 20 overs. The boys in blue ended as the runners-up of the tournament, as the final match ended in heartbreak.
Rohit Sharma scored just 4 runs in the final of the 2006 U19 World Cup
Rohit Sharma batted at no. 3 for India and scored 4 runs off 7 balls before being dismissed by Anwar Ali. And Rohit was not the only top-order Indian batsman who failed in the game, hardly any specialist Indian batsman went into the double digits at all.
It was the leg spinner Piyush Chawla who showed some resilience towards the end and scored 25 runs lower down the order to raise some hopes, but the task was too difficult for him and the game eventually went in the favour of Pakistan who were captained by the wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmad.
Prasanna shared the story after BCCI uploaded the picture of Rohit Sharma having a chat with India’s next crop of youngsters at the National Cricket Academy, where the U19 team is preparing for their upcoming assignment which is the U19 Asia Cup.
