Delhi Capitals were one of the franchises who were very keen to bid for most of the big overseas names as the players went under the hammer in the IPL mega auction. They wanted to buy the best T20 talent available in the overseas category.

Although Delhi Capitals ended up buying some really good players, they now find themselves in a very strange situation where 5 out of the 7 overseas players that they bought are going to be unavailable for the first week of the tournament for different reasons.

David Warner, who had started his IPL career at Delhi Capitals (earlier Delhi Daredevils) many years ago, was bought by the franchise again after a very successful stint at Sunrisers Hyderabad, but he is currently playing in the test series against Pakistan and after the completion of the series, he will fly home to Australia before joining the Capitals’ camp.

Mitchell Marsh, another fierce Aussie batter who was also the man of the match in the final of the T20 World Cup last year, is a part of the Kangaroo squad for the white ball series against Pakistan. So, he will be representing his national team while the first week of IPL gets underway.

Anrich Nortje has been one of the key performers for Delhi Capitals in the last two IPL seasons

Anrich Nortje, the South African fast bowler who played a key role in Delhi’s qualification to the IPL playoffs in the last couple of years, is currently injured and it’s not yet certain when he will join the team. A couple of other absentees for Delhi Capitals in the first week will be Lungi Ngidi and Mustafizur Rahman.

South Africa and Bangladesh will be playing a bilateral series during the first week of IPL and both Ngidi and Mustafizur will be involved in that. Ngidi might choose to not play the test series after the white ball series, as the reports suggest, but he might still miss the first week of IPL as he will fly to India slightly late.
