ENG vs NZ Live Update: As a result of a positive test for COVID-19, New Zealand’s captain, Kane Williamson, was unable to participate in the second test match against England, and the All Blacks were forced to play without his services. Tom Latham took charge of the New Zealand team for the test match at Trent Bridge. The BlackCaps are now down 0-1 in the series after suffering a loss by five wickets in the first game at Lord’s. Former New Zealand player Simon Doull believes that it could be a good moment for New Zealand to make a change in leadership for the longest format of the game.

ENG vs NZ Live Update: Simon Doull and Grant Elliott feel that Kane Williamson should play as a batsman

Williamson has been the captain of the New Zealand national team since 2016 when he succeeded Brendon McCullum as captain upon the latter’s retirement. In the opinion of Doull, Williamson should become “the finest batsman New Zealand has ever had.”

“I almost believe that if Kane Williamson is fit to play and lead the team in the third Test, it could be for the final time in Test cricket as captain. I believe that Tom Latham should take charge of this test match team right now. Kane has done it for a long enough time. I just want him to be the finest batsman New Zealand has ever had—and he will be,” New Zealand cricket commentator Martin Doull remarked on-air during the second test of the series, as cited by the New Indian Express.

In response to the remarks made by Doull, the conversation was continued by Grant Elliott, a former cricketer for New Zealand, who stated his opinion that Williamson was handed the duty to lead his nation a little bit too early in his career.

“Unfortunately, he was given the captaincy at such a young age, and there are a lot of duties that come with being captain. It’s a hit for some folks and a miss for others. I believe it’s up to Kane whether he appreciates it or not, but I think it would take a lot of weight off of his batting. We could simply enjoy watching…probably our best-ever batsman (be successful at the crease),” Elliott said.

Williamson has led New Zealand to victory in 22 of their 39 Test matches as captain thus far. In 2021, under his leadership, the nation won the first-ever World Test Championship by defeating India in the tournament’s final match.
