England defeated Sri Lanka, thereby, putting Australia out of the race for the semi-finals. It is surprising because many had predicted Australia to win the competition. However, that will not happen. On that note, here, we take a look at how Twitter reacted as England eliminate Australia from the 2022 T20 World Cup.
England eliminate Australia from the T20 World Cup
Batting first, Sri Lanka actually had a positive start. They had a stunning start to the powerplay and at that time, Australia would have been confident. However, the English bowlers fought their way back into the game. The likes of Mark Wood were impressive at the death. In the end, Sri Lanka was able to finish with just 141 runs on the board. Nevertheless, they still had a chance because England would chase the score on a used wicket.
The English openers matched Sri Lanka with the start in the powerplay. With such a strong beginning, despite some wickets falling, England never looked like losing. In the end, it was a comfortable victory for them. With this win, they took the second position in the group. Australia wanted Sri Lanka to win the match to have a chance of entering the semis. Hence, they have been knocked out of the competition.
Twitter reacts to the hosts bowing out of the tournament early
Before the tournament started, many felt that Australia would win the competition. The defending champions had a balanced squad and were playing at home. However, it was a bad loss for them in the first match against New Zealand. Although they won their next games, it was not enough for the Aussies. They also had one match against England abandoned, which could have gone their way if they played well. Nevertheless, with them going out, here is how Twitter reacted:
They made it tricky for themselves later on, but England are through to the semi-finals.
