“Why does it have only one game?” Aakash Chopra on WTC Final

The final will take place in The Oval, England from 7th to 11th June. With both teams set to face off in the one-off Test, many fans and pundits feel that there should’ve been at least more than one Test match needed to determine the winner of the WTC.

The latest to join the bandwagon is cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra. He has asked some harsh questions to the ICC. He highlighted why the final only happens in England and why isn’t there a Test series to determine the winner.

Taking to his Twitter account, he said: “Why do WTC Finals happen only in England? Neutral venue but it mirrors non-Asian conditions. Why does it have only one game? Why not have a Test series to determine the World Test Champion? Why not have one test each at home and one at a neutral venue? Ambitious…yes, of course.”

“No tournament lasts two years to find its winner,” Aakash Chopra on WTC Final being a one-off Test

Chopra further went on to say that if ICC is holding a two-year long tournament, then then the final should be a three-match series. He elaborated:

“No tournament lasts two years to find its winner. So, please don’t throw ‘final should be one knockout game’ in my direction. Test cricket is a very unique sport…lasts five days. The championship lasts two years. Finals can surely be a 3-match series.”

With many fans and pundits demanding a three-match Test series to determine the winner of the WTC, ICC surely would be under pressure. It remains to be seen if there will be any change related to the format of the Test Championship or not.
