Mayank Agarwal was one of the only two players who were retained by the Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL mega auction and it was pretty much clear at that point of time itself that the franchise was looking at him as a leadership option with KL Rahul having parted ways.
However, when they bought Shikhar Dhawan in the mega auction, there were discussions if Dhawan could be a potential Punjab captain as well, as he is also someone who has played for India for a long time and has got the experience of captaining in the IPL before.
Now, with hardly a month remaining before the new IPL season gets underway, the Punjab management has made the decision that Mayank Agarwal is the right man to take the team forward as captain and Dhawan will play as a specialist opener.
Agarwal was the vice-captain of Punjab Kings in the last IPL season as well and had actually captained them in one of the games when KL Rahul had to go through a surgery in the middle of the first leg of the tournament. Having played for the franchise for a decent period of time now, Agarwal enjoys a lot of support from the Punjab fanbase.
Captaining full time in the IPL will be a challenge for Mayank Agarwal
Punjab Kings have assembled a strong team in the auction and they seem to have most of their bases covered on paper, but captaining full time in the IPL is a very difficult job and Agarwal will have to ensure he is right at the top of his game with his decision making skills and use the resources at his disposal to the maximum efficiency.
Punjab fans, meanwhile, are very happy with the appointment of Mayank Agarwal as captain, as they are hoping he will change the fortune of the team and guide them to an IPL title which has eluded them since the start of the IPL.
