Delhi Capitals (DC), on Saturday, February 12, roped in Australia’s David Warner at a price of INR 6.25 crores in the IPL 2022 mega auction. Warner is currently the leading run-scorer in the history of the IPL among the foreign players. The southpaw started his career in the league for the Delhi Daredevils, now Capitals, but then moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

At the Orange Army, he won the Orange Cap quite a few times and turned out to be a stalwart for them. In 2016, Warner captained the Sunrisers to their maiden IPL title after beating the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. He was a fulcrum of their batting order since 2014.

But in 2021, Warner got himself tangled in a controversy and subsequently, he was removed as their skipper. The left-hander also lost his place from the SRH playing eleven. In the end, the Sunrisers left David Warner out ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. Thereafter Warner set himself a base price of INR 2 crore for the mega auction.

The Capitals started bidding for him after which Chennai Super Kings (CSK) joined them. At INR 4.80 crores, four-time IPL champions Super Kings backed off. From there on, the Capitals entered into a bidding war with five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI), who failed to qualify for the playoffs last season.

The two teams went along for quite a while before the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai-based franchise decided to throw in the towel. Warner’s inclusion is expected to strengthen the Capitals’ batting unit since he recently became the Player of the Tournament in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

With Warner in the team, it’s pretty much expected that he will open the batting with the young Prithvi Shaw, who was earlier retained by the franchise. But Warner may not be the skipper since the team already has Rishabh Pant, who led during the second leg of IPL 2021.
