The New Zealand national cricket team pulled off one of the greatest wins in the history of Test cricket. Tim Southee-led New Zealand cricket team beat the Sri Lankan cricket team by two wickets in the last ball.
The cricket fraternity ran through a roller coaster of emotions as both teams had a chance to either win a game or settle for a draw. There were several dramatic moments in the last over of the first Test match.
The first Test was stretched to Day 5 as both teams were figuring out a way to come out on top. As for Sri Lanka, they didn’t want the chance to slip away from their hands as they were aiming to qualify for the WTC Final, with India and Australia heading for a draw in the final Test in Ahmedabad.
However, the Sri Lankans came too close to winning the game but it was New Zealand who had the last laugh in the battle. Sri Lanka’s defeat means that Team India have automatically qualified for the WTC final irrespective of the result in the Ahmedabad Test match.
Neil Wagner’s old quote goes viral following New Zealand’s epic Test win over Sri Lanka
When New Zealand required 1 run to win off the last ball of the first Test against Sri Lanka. Kane Williamson was on strike to face Asitha Fernando’s delivery but missed to time it properly.
As it turned out, Kane Williamson quickly ended up taking the single by reaching the non-striker’s end with a full-blooded dive. On the other hand, Neil Wagner who was at the non-striker’s end sprinted towards the striker’s end to complete the run despite his injury as New Zealand won the Test opener at Hagley Oval.
For the record, Neil Wagner injured his right leg in the build-up to his run-up during the last hour of Day 3. Despite having age on his side, the injured man still sprinted towards the striker’s end to complete a run.
Following New Zealand’s epic win, Wagner’s old quote went viral on the internet. In 2020, he said unless they carry him off on a stretcher, he is going to try and do everything he can for the team.
“Unless they carry me off on a stretcher, I'm going to try & do everything I can.”
Neil Wagner once said.

I have never been in awe of a cricketer as i have been with this man. Absolute workhorse and a team player, one of a kind cricketer, loves this game with a passion. Any team would be lucky to have this man in their team. Hope we see him in action soon.

Ha – what a ledge. Is that him done now? He seems to have been getting wickets through sheer willpower alone for a while now.
