The new era of the Indian team in the T20 format is finally here. After the T20 World Cup 2022 finishes, India will gear up for a T20I series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will not be part of the T20I series. So, Hardik Pandya will serve as the captain of the team in that series. The selectors have also appointed Rishabh Pant as his deputy for the series.
Rohit Sharma is 36 years old. So, he is definitely at the fag end of his career. Also, it is most likely that this will be the last T20 World Cup for the current all-format captain. So, the selectors are keeping an eye on the 2024 T20 World Cup and hence, are planning to build a team accordingly. It’s a no-brainer, that Hardik Pandya was seen as the potential replacement for Rohit Sharma at the helm.
Hardik Pandya captained a professional side for the first time in IPL 2022. He was given the reigns of the new franchise, Gujarat Titans. He led his team superbly in the very first season and was the vital reason why Gujarat Titans won the title. Cricket fans and experts could spot his tactical awareness and calmness in handling the team.
He also took over the reigns of Team India in the T20I series against Ireland, earlier this year. The Indian team went on to win the series 2-0. He also led the team against West Indies in the last T20I of the series when Rohit Sharma decided to take a rest. The team went on to comfortably win that game also. So, the selectors are seeing him as the possible replacement for Rohit Sharma as the captain of the T20I team.
Rishabh Pant has been out of the T20I team in the World Cup so far because of his below-par performances and strike rate in the T20 format. However, the Delhi Capitals captain will find a breath of fresh air to solidify his position after he was elected as the vice-captain in the series against New Zealand.
