Fans on Twitter were not happy with Sanju Samson and expressed their disappointment over his poor tactics in the 39th over of the game. They felt that the batter could’ve kept strike in the penultimate over and guided his side home in the first ODI against South Africa.
India fell short by 9 runs as South Africa takes a 1-0 lead in the series
In what was a rain-curtailed match, India suffered a disappointing loss as they fell short of just 9 runs. Opting to bowl, it was a decent effort from them as they made South African batters work hard for the runs.
But Heinrich Klassen (74*) and David Miller (75*) produced a superlative effort with the bat in the end and helped their side post a total of 249 runs on the board after a slow start. For India, Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers as he took 2 wickets to return with figures of 2/35.
India then had a poor start with the bat as they lost wickets in quick succession with Shikhar Dhawan (4), Shubman Gill (3), Ruturaj Gaikwad (19) and Ishan Kishan (20) back in the hut for just 51 runs.
Shreyas Iyer then played a counter-attacking inning at the one end and scored a quick fifty whereas Sanju Samson, on the other hand, held the one end and took the game deep along with punishing short balls. He stitched 93 runs partnership with Shardul Thakur to keep the hopes of Indian fans alive.
However, he didn’t take a strike in the penultimate over when he had the opportunity to and as a result of which he didn’t face a single ball in the 39th over. With 30 runs needed off the last over, he still kept his side in the hunt but failed to take them home.
Fans expressed disappointment with Sanju Samson not taking strike in 39th over
Fans lauded Sanju Samson for his knock but expressed disappointment with him not taking strike in 39th over. They felt that the keeper batter lacked game awareness and should’ve taken strike in that over. Here are some of the reactions:
Sanju Samson just became villain by alllowing Avesh Khan to play 19th over.

India didnt have a good chance of winning anyways, but this is really terrible, Sanju Samson really should’ve done all he can to be on strike, instead Avesh Khan has been forced to play and waste 5 balls.

One entire over to Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan. We'll played Sanju Samson, but that was egregious.

South Africa have defeated India in the first ODI at Lucknow.
AdvertisementNot sure why Sanju Samson ran two and gave the strike back to Avesh Khan in the penultimate over, as a set batter he should have faced majority of the deliveries. That over cost India the match. #INDvSA

Sanju Samson lacks cricketing acumen. Wasted 19th over on Avesh Khan and remains unbeaten for a losing cause. Shameful #IndvsSAodi

Sanju Samson was playing such a good innings. But this is really surprising to see that he's giving Avesh Khan a whole over to play when 37 runs are required off 12 balls. Don't know what was he thinking while doing so.
Just unexplainable 🤲#IndvsSAodi— Akshit Sharma🇮🇳 (@ShrmaGka_Ladka) October 6, 2022

Sanjusamson seems don’t have game sense or he was having more confidence on Avesh khan then on himself. When people ask why sanju samson is not in the main team, so skill is not only thing u need game sense also and zeal to win #INDvsSA #SanjuSamson

Sanju Samson miscalculated when Avesh Khan was batting, otherwise we'll fought inning from Sanju Samson.#IndvsSAodi

1) Sanju Samson should have fired a bit earlier or should have gone for some doubles pushing the ball in gaps.
2) Sanju Samson miscalculated in 39th over running for double keeping Avesh Khan on strike.AdvertisementThese two mistakes. There is no one like @imVkohli in run chase. #INDvSA

This is an error in judgement by Sanju Samson. Leaving Avesh Khan to bat when 37 are needed out of 12 is plain stupidity. #INDvSA

Calculative errors from Sanju Samson has cost us today's match although he played a brilliant innings under pressure . But I seriously feel that he should have taken a single rather than a double in the 2nd last over when Avesh Khan was batting!!

#SanjuSamson always a foolish batsmen! 37.5 ball should have been hit for boundary instead of trying to take single and that didn't happen, Avesh khan with avesham 5 balls wasted.. If Sanju would have played 5 balls of avesh khan last over 15 can be gettable 🤠
