India fell short by 9 runs as South Africa takes a 1-0 lead in the series

In what was a rain-curtailed match, India suffered a disappointing loss as they fell short of just 9 runs. Opting to bowl, it was a decent effort from them as they made South African batters work hard for the runs.

But Heinrich Klassen (74*) and David Miller (75*) produced a superlative effort with the bat in the end and helped their side post a total of 249 runs on the board after a slow start. For India, Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers as he took 2 wickets to return with figures of 2/35.

India then had a poor start with the bat as they lost wickets in quick succession with Shikhar Dhawan (4), Shubman Gill (3), Ruturaj Gaikwad (19) and Ishan Kishan (20) back in the hut for just 51 runs.

Shreyas Iyer then played a counter-attacking inning at the one end and scored a quick fifty whereas Sanju Samson, on the other hand, held the one end and took the game deep along with punishing short balls. He stitched 93 runs partnership with Shardul Thakur to keep the hopes of Indian fans alive.

However, he didn’t take a strike in the penultimate over when he had the opportunity to and as a result of which he didn’t face a single ball in the 39th over. With 30 runs needed off the last over, he still kept his side in the hunt but failed to take them home.
