Rohit Sharma, who is now the permanent captain of the Indian cricket team in all three formats of the game, has said that captaincy is all about winning championships, rather than just scoring a lot of runs because of championship and the memories that the players create with it stay with them for life.

According to Rohit Sharma, who was speaking on Revsportz, championships give the team a collective sense of accomplishment. As a player or as a captain, one can score runs and that can bring a personal sense of accomplishment, but collective accomplishment is only possible with championships.

Rohit was already given India’s white-ball captaincy a couple of months back and now that he has been given the Test captaincy as well, he is going to lead India’s campaign in three World tournaments – the T20 World Cup which will take place in Australia later this year, the World Test Championship final which will take place in England next year (if India qualifies for it) and the ODI World Cup which India will play at home next year.

Rohit Sharma would want to win 2 out of next 3 World Championships

If India manages to win 2 out of these 3 titles under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, it will create a great legacy for Rohit as a leader. The classy opener already has a great legacy as a leader in IPL and the Indian fans would now hope that the new Indian captain replicates that in international cricket as well.

Not being able to win World Championships has been India’s biggest issue in the last 8 years. The last World Championship that India had won was under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in 2013 when they had beaten England in their own backyard in the final of ICC Champions Trophy. It was India’s third world triumph in a space of 6 years after the T20 World Cup of 2007 and the ODI World Cup of 2011.

However, after the Champions trophy 2013, India has struggled to win the world Championships. The Indian fans would ve delighted to see that the new captain is well aware of the team’s struggles in the knockout phases of the world tournaments and he wants to rectify it straightaway.
