Ashish Nehra, the IPL winning coach of Gujarat Titans, reckons that the Indian head coach Rahul Dravid needs to intervene during the game itself if he feels that an inexperienced captain like Rishabh Pant is making a captaincy error on the ground.

Ashish Nehra was one of the pundits on the post match show of Cricbuzz after India’s first T20I against South Africa and he was asked if the tactical errors made by a team can be solely attributed to the captain on the ground or the team management also has a role to play in that.

Nehra said it depends on the head coach how he likes to operate, but in Nehra’s opinion, if the head coach feels something during the course of the game, he should send a message to the captain straightaway rather than talking about things in the hindsight later.

No use of talking to the captain later: Ashish Nehra

According to Nehra, there is no use of talking about things later and wondering what if a certain decision would have been made. In T20 cricket, it’s not that hard to send a message on the ground because the dugouts are there on the sidelines of the ground itself and the coach can send a message to the captain via anyone immediately.

Ashish Nehra also insisted that it’s not just the head coach, but even if the senior players of the team feel that they can offer an advice to Pant, they should offer it straight away rather than waiting for the game to get over and then talk to the captain later.

When asked about his overall view on the captaincy of Rishabh Pant, Nehra said he is inexperienced at the moment and although he has captained in a couple of seasons in the IPL, he has a long way to go. He will learn as he captains in more and more games.
