“He Was Captaining The Team But He Realized”- Harbhajan Singh Reveals Why Ricky Ponting Stepped Down As MI’s Captain In IPL 2013

Former Mumbai Indians off-spinner Harbhajan Singh recently recalled the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League where he played under the captaincy of Australian legend Ricky Ponting for a few matches. Ponting had passed his prime, but the Mumbai-based franchise gave him a chance to lead the team.

Mumbai Indians could not impress much under the captaincy of Ricky Ponting. Since his individual performances were not up to the mark as well, Ponting decided to step down as the captain and hand over the team’s reins to Rohit Sharma. The decision proved to be a masterstroke as Rohit led MI to their first championship that season.

Speaking about how Ponting had self-realization about how he should step down as the captain of the Mumbai Indians team, Harbhajan Singh said on Sportskeeda’s Match Ki Baat:

“It happened with Ricky Ponting in 2013. He was captaining the team but he realized that he was letting the team down with his batting. So after 5-6 games, he himself stepped down and became a part of the think tank and we won the title that year.”

Harbhajan Singh thinks Kane Williamson should do the same thing as Ricky Ponting

During the same discussion, Harbhajan Singh added that SunRisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson should make the same decision because he has struggled to get going with the willow in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Since he is an overseas player, his poor form has impacted the team’s overall performance.

“Williamson should think of handing the captaincy to someone else and focus on his batting,” Harbhajan Singh added.

While Ponting had dropped himself from the playing XI as well, Harbhajan thinks Williamson should just leave the captaincy and focus on batting at the moment in the IPL. He concluded by saying that he can become the team next year again.
