While Mark Wood will be missing the end of the IPL 2023 to be there for the birth of his daughter in late May, the rest of the English players are scheduled to remain in India for the whole of the tournament. Wood has been sick for the past two matches, but he has been a revelation for the Lucknow Super Giants this season, picking up 11 wickets in four games.

Wood plans to return in the following weeks to be there for the birth of his and Sarah’s second child, due at the end of May. It now seems quite improbable that he will go back to India.

The Super Giants’ next encounter is on April 28 against the Punjab Kings, and then on May 1 and 3, they host the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings. Naveen-ul-Haq, an Afghan seamer who has bowled tight spells in his first two games, has been chosen to replace Wood.

England plays Ireland in a one-off Test at Lord’s on June 1, four days after the IPL final, but ESPNcricinfo has learned that the ECB has no plans to force players to miss the tournament after they have already assured the BCCI and franchises that they will be available for the entire season.

The present leadership of the ECB believes that participating in high-stakes, knockout games is the perfect preparation for playing in the semi-finals and finals of international tournaments, hence they have actively pushed players to fly to India to acquire experience at the IPL during the previous eight seasons.

The board has in the past established a firm date of return for players participating in their first international obligations of the home summer, but this summer they will handle it on an individual basis. The regular season of the IPL concludes on May 21, followed by the semifinals and finals on May 23, 24, and 28.
