Eoin Morgan doesn’t captain KKR, Video analyst does: Gautam Gambhir

KKR has qualified to IPL 2021 playoffs under Eoin Morgan's captaincy

Eoin Morgan is regarded as one of the best captains in the world at the moment, particularly the way he changed England’s approach of playing white-ball cricket under his captaincy and then went on to captain England to a World Cup triumph in 2019.

KKR has made a brilliant comeback as well under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy in IPL 2021. They were able to win only 2 out of the 7 games in the first leg of the tournament, but they turned it around in the second leg as they won 5 out of their remaining 7 games and qualified for the playoffs on the basis of a superior net run rate.

Gautam Gambhir is not convinced about the captaincy of Eoin Morgan

However, Gautam Gambhir, who is a former KKR captain himself and captained KKR to two IPL trophies, is not convinced about Eoin Morgan’s captaincy because of the fact that Morgan takes inputs from the video analyst who sits in the KKR dugout and keeps showing some kind of code to Morgan while the match goes on. It has been insisted that those codes are shown only to suggest Morgan some options to try, and it is not necessary for Morgan to follow those codes.

But, according to Gambhir, if the video analyst is showing any sort of code from the dugout, it simply means that he is virtually the captain of the side and plotting all the moves that KKR will try on the ground. In that scenario, how can one be sure about Morgan’s captaincy?

“Morgan’s point of view, I’m not sure because he doesn’t captain, so it’s the video analyst that captains the side. He only just looks at the video analyst, so I don’t know whether he’s the captain on the field or (if the) captaincy is happening off the field,” Gambhir said while speaking in a talk show organised by ESPNcricinfo.

Eoin Morgan will be captaining KKR in the eliminator game against RCB this Monday night at Sharjah. The winner of that game will move to qualifier 2, while the team losing that game will be eliminated from the tournament.
