With Ravindra Jadeja absent, Axar Patel was expected to take his place in the XI. However, India opted for a different combination. Dinesh Karthik had to miss out along with Jadeja and Avesh Khan. Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and Ravi Bishnoi got a chance in the XI.

It needs to be noted that Hooda has been in brilliant form recently. He even scored a century a few weeks ago. Considering he offers a few overs of spin, it was surprising that India has not been considering him in the XI. The squad needs multi-utility cricketers and Hooda was one of them. However, after weeks of not finding an opportunity, Hooda finally got a game against Pakistan. It now needs to be seen how he would make use of the opportunity. While he will be tasked with taking on the spinners, Hooda will also need to provide a few overs with the ball. Hardik Pandya and Deepak Hooda will need to together act as the fifth bowler and hence, the role of these all-rounders will be important.
