The Australian national cricket team locked horns with the South African cricket team in the first of the three-match Test series at The Gabba in Brisbane. The Test opener made the headlines for all the weird reasons.
The fact that the match ended within two days questioned the quality of the wicket. Batting first, the visitors were bowled out for just 152 runs in the first innings. Kyle Verreynne top-scored with 64 runs including 8 fours and a six.
Temba Bavuma chipped in with 38 runs including three fours. On the other hand, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon accounted for three dismissals apiece whereas skipper Pat Cummins and Scott Boland took two wickets each.
In response, Australia could post 218 runs on the board, with the help of Travis Head’s 92 (13 fours and a six). On the contrary, Kagiso Rabada accounted for four dismissals whereas Marco Jansen took three wickets.
ICC rated Gabba’s pitch as “Below average”
South Africa responded with a mere 99 in the second innings as they set up a target of 34 for the hosts. While everyone expected the hosts to win the game by 10 wickets because of a small target.
However, Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers for Proteas as he accounted for four dismissals. Australia somehow got the job done as they won the game by six wickets and took the first lead in the series.
Not long ago, the International Cricket Council rated Rawalpindi’s pitch as “below average”. Meanwhile, the ICC has now come up with a rating for Gabba’s pitch and it is “below average”.
The fans will hope that there is plenty of cricketing action and drama left in the remainder of the Test series. The second Test between Australia and South Africa will kick off on January 14 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
The third and final Test will kick off on January 17 at Perth Stadium, Perth.
Pat Cummins said pitch was fine. Then he shouldn't complain if he gets spinner friendly wicket in India

0 cares about rating… sometimes it's absolutely ok to have bowling dominating pitches

if a certain ground gets charged with "low quality" ..after a certain no. of times, it cannot host intl matches for 1 year

yea, just like Rawalpindi is rated extremely below avg pitch twice in a span of 1 year so that ground is in trouble if the quality is not rectified.
