BCCI has announced the squad for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies. As expected, there were a few surprises. Especially with the selection of a few players, the selectors seemed to have taken a bold call. India’s T20I squad: Ishan Kishan (wk), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Surya Kumar Yadav (VC), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya (C), Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar.
1) Mukesh Kumar
It has been only one IPL season in which Mukesh Kumar has played till now. As we all know, IPL forms a strong basis on which the T20I squad gets selected. Even in the one season that he played for Delhi Capitals, Mukesh Kumar did not play all the matches.
Mukesh’s attributes suit more for the ODI format and the Test format. Considering there were quite a few options available in the domestic circuit, it was surprising that he got selected for the Indian T20I squad.
2) Avesh Khan
Avesh Khan is one of the players surprisingly selected for the Indian Team for the West Indies T20I series. It has been a while since Avesh Khan has played for Team India. He was dropped after a string of performances in which he failed to make an impression.
Yes, he did do well in the Ranji Trophy but he did not have a great outing in IPL 2023. While he bowled well in patches, he also leaked a lot of runs. In fact, he also sat out a few games for LSG in the recently concluded season. Team India has many in-form options that they could have tried. Them going back to Avesh Khan is actually a surprising call.
