Cricket is not new to father-son duos. In the past, we have seen many duos who have been successful in playing for the country. However, when it comes to IPL, we have not witnessed two generations take part in the event. The tournament started only in 2008 and it has only been just more than a decade. Hence, we may not have arrived at the time to see the second generation take the field. That said, that is all set to happen soon. A few sons of former IPL cricketers are close to being ready to showcase their skills in the best T20 league on the planet. On that note, here, we take a look at five sons of former IPL players who could play in IPL soon.
1) Arjun Tendulkar – Sachin Tendulkar
Arjun Tendulkar is the closest to becoming the son of a former IPL player to also take part in the IPL. For the last few seasons, Arjun has been with the Mumbai Indians.
Chances have been hard to come by but Arjun has been having a decent domestic season so far. Playing for Goa, he is getting consistent opportunities. Hence, he might make his IPL debut in IPL 2023.
2) Tagenarine Chanderpaul – Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Shivnarine Chanderpaul is a legend when it comes to the Test and the ODI format. However, it was when his career was nearing its end that the T20 format started to rise. Nevertheless, the southpaw did play a few T20Is and even played in the IPL. In 2008, he played three games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Tagenarine, son of Shivnarine, has been selected to the West Indies Test squad recently. Although he has not played T20s so far, it is just a matter of time before that happens. Tagenarine happens to be a technically sound cricketer just like his father. Once he gets some experience at the highest level, he should be ready for an experience in the IPL.
3) Aryan Bangar – Sanjay Bangar
Aryan Bangar is one of the sons of former IPL players who could play in IPL soon. Sanjay Bangar played for teams such as the Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders in the first few years of the IPL. Later, he took up coaching. He is currently the Head Coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Just like his father, Aryan is also an all-rounder. When it comes to U19 competitions, he is doing well and soon, he is set to make his senior debut. With Sanjay Bangar an influential figure, it may not be a surprise if Bangar gets the taste of IPL soon.
4) Thando Ntini – Makhaya Ntini
One of the popular bowlers who came out of South Africa, Makhaya Ntini represented Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. In his nine-game IPL career, he collected a total of seven wickets.
Thando Ntini is also a pacer and in T20 cricket, till now, he has taken 18 wickets in 18 games at an economy of 9.33. There is scope for improvement and with South Africa also setting up a good platform with SA20 League, we might see Thando in the IPL in a few years’ time.
5) Jake Lehmann – Darren Lehmann
Jake Lehmann is also one of the sons of former IPL players who could play in IPL soon. Darren Lehmann played in IPL 2008 for Rajasthan Royals. Later, in 2009, he coached Deccan Chargers to a title victory.
Jake Lehmann is the son of Darren and is a left-handed batter. Although Jake already has a lot of BBL experience, he is yet to find his feet in the T20 format. Nevertheless, he has time and can still do well in the format.
