Captaincy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Being a captain in cricket is one of the most challenging jobs for a player because he has to play his own game and needs to figure out many things. If a team wins captain is appreciated because of how he led the team, and if the team loses again, he’s the one who is blamed. Doing captaincy in IPL is a task to perform under pressure and take your team closer to victory. If we are talking about most wins as a captain, then Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are two of the legends in cricket and stand in the list of captains with the most wins in IPL history. IPL is a very competitive stage for cricket because numerous cricketers around the globe participate in it.

1. MS Dhoni – 114 wins in 192 matches

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not only India’s most successful captain but is also one of the most successful in IPL. MS has won 114 games out of 192 matches as a captain, and in his whole IPL duration, apart from Chennai Super Kings, he played for Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017. If we look at his records, he has proved himself and is the most valuable Chennai Super Kings player.

Overall, MS Dhoni has played 211 matches and has scored 4669 runs at a tremendous strike rate of 136.64. In the 2020 edition, many questioned Dhoni’s captaincy because that season was probably the worst season for CSK but, in,2021 CSK is looking fabulous and currently in the top 4 in the points table.

2. Rohit Sharma – 72 wins in 123 matches

No other captain than Rohit Sharma has won 5 trophies in IPL. Overall, Rohit Sharma has won 6 IPL trophies, but five awards are always special for any captain. Hitman Sharma has overall played 207 matches, but, as a captain, he has won 72 games out of 123 games, and his winning percentage is almost 60% which is slightly higher than MS Dhoni. Mumbai Indians have been more competitive under Rohit’s captaincy.

Apart from the winning percentage, the overall team displays a top-notch performance and can make the matches more exciting. In Rohit’s whole IPL career, he has scored 5480 runs till now and makes it to the list of captains with the most wins in IPL history.

3. Gautam Gambhir – 70 wins in 128 matches

Gautam Gambhir is one of the most underrated leaders when it comes to IPL. Gambhir has helped KKR lift the IPL trophy twice and has made players perform and give their best, leading KKR towards victory in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir has also contributed a lot to the Indian team and has played the anchors role in the 2007 T20 WC Final and 2011 world cup final. 

Gambhir has captained KKR and DD but has been more successful for KKR. Overall he has played 128 games as a captain and won 70 times, and his winning percentage is around 55, which is quite decent. Apart from MS and Rohit Gambhir has set his mark as a captain. In his whole IPL career, he played 154 games and scored 4218 runs.

4. Virat Kohli – 60 wins in 132 matches

Virat Kohli has been a superstar of the game of cricket. Virat has shown the world that how to time the ball perfectly. Virat Kohli has won 60 matches out of 132 as a captain. Kohli’s records are pretty remarkable, and this year, his team RCB looked brilliant, and indeed, King Kohli was in good form in this years IPL. Virat Kohli was appointed as RCB’s full-time captain in 2013, and since then, he’s leading the side.

Virat’s overall career consists of one orange cap in 2016 and has played 199 matches so far and scored 6076 runs at a strike rate of 130.41. Virat Kohli is trying his best to clinch the IPL title.

5. David Warner – 35 wins in 69 matches 

Ex Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper is the only overseas captain on this list because of his 35 wins in 69 matches. David Warner has been a terrific player, and because of his outstanding captaincy, SRH won the 2016 edition of IPL. Warner’s winning percentage is around 52%. Even though being an overseas player, he has set a mark in IPL.

Warner has won the orange cup three times in his IPL career, i.e. in 2015, 2017 and 2019 and has been a core member of the orange army. Overall he has played for Delhi Daredevils and currently plays for SRH, and has scored 5447 runs in 148 matches at a sizzling strike rate of 140.13.
