If you take a look at it closely, IPL is slowly entering its transition era. Some of the stars of the league are getting old and we are witnessing youngsters take up more important roles in the competition. This is bound to happen for any league in any sport. In this context, IPL 2024 could be a key competition as a number of youngsters could begin their captaincy journey. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of four players who could make their captaincy debut in IPL 2024.

1) Shubman Gill (Already Confirmed)

One of the most surprising moves before IPL 2024 is that of Hardik Pandya moving to Mumbai Indians. As a skipper, Hardik helped GT win the title in IPL 2022 and then took the team to the finals in IPL 2023. Despite all of this, due to reasons unknown, Hardik decided to move to MI.

Now, it is obvious that Shubman Gill would take up the mantle from Hardik. He is the next big thing in Indian cricket and it is important that he becomes an IPL skipper already. GT has already announced that Shubman Gill is indeed their next skipper.

2) Ruturaj Gaikwad could make his captaincy debut in IPL 2024

Ruturaj Gaikwad is a part of this list of players who could make their captaincy debut in IPL 2024. As per the expectations of many, Ruturaj Gaikwad will replace MS Dhoni after the latter retires. Rutu has already led Team India and has been vice-captain, as well.

MS Dhoni has knee issues and it won’t be a surprise if he does not play a few games in IPL 2024. In that case, it is likely that Ruturaj Gaikwad would captain the side. It is important that Ruturaj does this while MS Dhoni is still in the squad. This would help him learn and develop himself better as a leader.

3) Mitchell Marsh

It is not known as to what fitness Rishabh Pant is currently at. Nevertheless, it is said that he would definitely play in IPL 2024. If he is playing, he would surely captain the side, as well.

Last season, it was David Warner who skippered the side in Pant’s absence. However, with Warner also ageing and his form also not hitting its peak in IPL, Ricky Ponting could have other ideas. Mitchell Marsh is the future skipper of Australia and has plenty of leadership skills. For the future of the franchise, as well, it is good to have another captaincy option. Hence, Marsh could get to lead the side if Pant is absent for one or two matches.

4) Washington Sundar

Sundar is one of the players who could make their captaincy debut in IPL 2024. If Aiden Markram is not a part of the playing XI for one or two games, appointing Bhuvneshwar Kumar again as the skipper might not favour SRH when you take the future into account.

Washington Sundar has captaincy experience. He needs confidence to take his career to the next level. Therefore, giving him this role, provided he is good fitness-wise, would be an ideal option for the team.
