Getting a coaching gig in IPL helps a lot for an ex-players career. This would land them opportunities in other franchises and with IPL Teams investing in overseas leagues, there is a lot of scope for the growth of a coach’s career. Usually, a player who does well for a franchise gets a role in the same team. We have seen this with players such as Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Brendon McCullum. However, there are different cases, too. On that note, here, we take a look at three players who are legends of one franchise but are on the backroom staff of a different team.

1) Lasith Malinga (Rajasthan Royals) – Legend of Mumbai Indians

Lasith Malinga is currently the highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. However, he is the bowling coach of the Rajasthan Royals.

Interestingly, a few seasons ago, Lasith had a similar role at MI. The five-time champions are known for their relations with players but it is surprising in Malinga’s case. Maybe, Kumar Sangakkara might have had a role to play in Malinga coming to RR.

2) Gautam Gambhir (Lucknow Super Giants) – Legend of Kolkata Knight Riders

3345 runs in 122 games for Kolkata Knight Riders

Gautam Gambhir is one of the players who are legends of one franchise but are in the backroom staff of a different team. The former India opener won two titles with KKR as the skipper. Since then, the franchise has not won the tournament. Gambhir is also the highest run-getter for KKR, till now.

At the moment, Gambhir is the Mentor and Batting Coach of Lucknow Super Giants. The relationship with the owners could have played a role in Gambhir exiting KKR and also joining LSG.

3) Shane Watson (Delhi Capitals) – Legend of Chennai Super Kings

Watson has played only a few seasons for CSK but he can be considered a legend because he had a direct role in landing a trophy. The Aussie all-rounder also played numerous impact knocks to help CSK do well.

It is clear that Watson wants to pursue a coaching career. He is assisting Ricky Ponting at Delhi Capitals and could land a bigger role in the future.
