A foreign captain could be the way forward for Punjab Kings. With Ricky Ponting at the helm as the Head Coach, we could most likely see an Australian skipper. Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith combined to win the Major League Cricket this year. It has been a couple of years since Smith has played in the IPL. Nevertheless, considering he has started doing well in T20s now, there is a chance that he could play in IPL again.
A former captain at Rajasthan Royals and RPS, Steve Smith has the desired experience. With the coach having worked with him already, the chemistry could push PBKS to sign Smith.
2) Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh is one of the Australian cricketers who can replace Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of the Punjab Kings. It is clear that Ponting likes Aussie cricketers and it will not be a surprise if he picks an Australian captain. The obvious choice will be the current Australian T20 captain, which happens to be Mitchell Marsh.
He is still finding his feet but has shown good potential. With the bat, we already know the kind of value he will add to the playing XI.
3) Marcus Stoinis
The all-rounder was in top form in IPL 2024. He managed to score a century at Chepauk, a venue that’s considered difficult for a visiting team. Ever since then, he has actually been doing well in various T20 leagues.
34 years old, considering his experience, he could be a fine fit for captaincy. Yes, there might not be much captaincy experience but with Ricky Ponting calling the shots, the combination could work well for the franchise.
