Mitchell Marsh is still recovering from an injury. Australia has already named him as the captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Throughout his career, Marsh has been injury-prone. Hence, it is a wise idea for the management to have some backups ready in case Marsh has to miss out. On that note, here, we take a look at two replacements Australia must keep ready if Mitchell Marsh is not fit for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
1) Matt Short
Matt Short has been with the Australian T20I squad for a while now. It was a bit unlucky for him to miss out on the squad. Nevertheless, he should be one of the ready backups available in case Australia faces any injury issues in the upcoming tournament.
Short is someone who is accustomed to play at No.3. He is also capable of doing a job in the lower middle-order. This flexibility could give him an edge. Moreover, he offers a bit with the ball. On his day, he can provide four overs of off-spin. This could be useful, especially on the slow pitches in the West Indies.
2) Jake Fraser-McGurk
Jake Fraser-McGurk is one of the replacements Australia must keep ready if Mitchell Marsh is not fit for the 2024 T20 World Cup. With the form that he is in, it is a surprise that the youngster is not in the Australian squad. One of the best batters for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, JFM will be the suitable replacement for Mitchell Marsh at No.3.
Although JFM would prefer a role as an opener, it would be better to not disturb David Warner and Travis Head. JFM would add more youthful flavour at No.3. Yes, there is a chance that he could go wrong but this is a risk worth taking for the Aussies. Anyways, it will also be a great learning experience for the cricketer.
