Gujarat Titans is a franchise with only two years of history, so far. Nevertheless, they have been successful, winning one trophy and reaching the finals in the other. As per reports, Mohammed Shami needs surgery on his heel and could miss IPL 2024. It is a massive blow for last year’s runners-up. The franchise could look at some of their older players who could fill the gap left by Shami. On that note, here, we take a look at two former players whom Gujarat Titans could sign as the replacement for Mohammed Shami.
1) Varun Aaron
The India cricketer recently announced his retirement from FC cricket. In the 2022 season, he was a part of the GT setup that won the title. He also played a few matches in that edition.
GT made forgotten man Mohit Sharma a reliable pacer in IPL 2023. They can do that with Varun Aaron, as well. Aaron has pace and can hit the deck hard. He can be close to Shami as a pacer. Also, with the new rule of two bouncers in an over, Varun can be a solid option in the middle overs. He can be used as an enforcer and that could further help the management to play around with their tactics.
2) Pradeep Sangwan
Pradeep Sangwan is one of the former players whom Gujarat Titans could sign as the replacement for Mohammed Shami. It was due to an injury that Sangwan missed most of the domestic cricket recently. Nevertheless, he is back to being a part of the game.
Yes, he might not have produced good results in recent times but he has experience to do the same. GT might need a left-arm pacer because Sushant Mishra is inexperienced and the other options are foreigners. Sangwan can open with the new ball and also has some variations to work in the other phases. Hence, he can be a good choice.
