Two of India’s most influential players over the last decade, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, have developed a strong friendship. At one point, Dhoni turned up the formal leadership to Kohli while still retaining the authority to call plays and arrange the field.
Trust between two batsmen at the crease is crucial when attempting to run between wickets, and Kohli and Dhoni are a model of how to do it without a call being made. Dhoni’s remarks and the spirit he instilled in the locker room after he departed from international cricket are still impressive aspects of his journey.
Kohli said it’s difficult to put into words the depth of his connection with Dhoni and gave the example of their mutual understanding when running between the wickets. The 33-year-old further noted that he believes misunderstandings are inevitable over the course of a lengthy career and that the emphasis should be placed on the team rather than on them.
While talking about the primary reason for the team’s success, Kohli also gave credit to Dhoni and praised the CSK captain for his help in the early stages of his career. So there was undying confidence in one another’s abilities to contribute to the team’s success. Eventually, the connection progressed beyond the confines of the game thanks to the mutual trust and faith that had developed between the two.
Kohli also added that Dhoni was the first one to message him when he going through a tough time. He also revealed what MS Dhoni told him during that time.
Virat Kohli said “When MS Dhoni reached out to me, he texted ‘When you are expected to be strong, looked as a strong individual – people forget to ask you, how you are doing – that hit me strongly. I am so lucky to have MS at my side every time”.
