Former Australian cricket team all-rounder Shane Watson has opined that the Mumbai Indians made a strategic mistake when they spent 15.25 crore from their budget to acquire the services of Ishan Kishan at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Watson, who has played for multiple franchises in the past, is currently one of the assistant coaches for Delhi Capitals.
DC started their IPL 2022 season with a win against the five-time champions Mumbai Indians. Since then, MI have not won a single game in the IPL 2022 tournament. The Mumbai-based franchise are on a six-match losing streak at the moment, having suffered defeats at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and DC.
During a recent chat with The Grade Cricketer, Shane Watson opined that the Mumbai Indians’ decision to sign Ishan Kishan for a whopping INR 15.25 crore is hurting them a lot. Here’s what he had to say:
“Spending so much money on Ishan Kishan… He is a very talented and skillful player, but he’s not worth blowing nearly your whole salary on. And then, going for Jofra Archer, not knowing whether he is going to come back in. He hasn’t played cricket for quite a while.”
Ishan Kishan is yet to his justify his massive price tag in IPL 2022
While Ishan Kishan was bought for 15.25 crore at the mega auction and was the most expensive pick among all, he is yet to justify that big price tag in this season. The young wicket-keeper has been used as an opener by the Mumbai Indians this season.
He has had scores of 14, 26, 3 and 13 in his last four matches. Interestingly, his strike rate was less than 100 in all four innings. Mumbai Indians fans will hope that Kishan returns to form soon and helps the Mumbai-based franchise snap their losing streak.
