Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has provided his insights about India’s top-order players in preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup that will take place in October 2022. He said that since there are so many choices, it is impossible to choose India’s top three. Because both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have missed a significant number of matches over the course of the last two months, the Indian management has been looking at other possibilities.
There is little doubt that Rohit Sharma will lead the batting for India, and either Rahul or Kohli will be his opening partner. In the absence of Rahul and Kohli, the Indian management decided to give Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant a go at opening the innings alongside Rohit. Both Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant have a solid track record of playing in the top and middle order of the batting order.
What did Sanjay Manjrekar say?
Pant was unable to create an impression comparable to that made by Suryakumar during the just completed Twenty20 International series against West Indies. Suryakumar showed his flexibility by opening the innings during this series. Manjrekar believes that Rahul and Kohli should both be included in the starting XI for major competitions, but he said that it is difficult to choose India’s top three players for the Twenty20 World Cup.
“I’m not going to answer it. This one is difficult, and extremely challenging since there are several genuine competitors for the position. Because of this, the matches that take place before the T20 World Cup are quite significant. K.L. Rahul should definitely be in the Twenty20 squad. Because of the nature of the venue and the amount of pressure that it brings, it has to be Virat Kohli. It’s going to be a challenging situation. We have seen Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant both batting in the top three, and this has happened on several occasions. These are all really interesting choices, so let’s see how it unfolds,” Manjrekar remarked.
