“Rocket science is easier,” Fans react on Twitter as new IPL format is announced for 2022

The new IPL format is going to be a bit different than the formats of the last season, and that’s because two new teams have been added to the IPL. The schedule of this year is not expanded enough for all the teams to play against each other twice, because that would mean each team would play 18 games each and the tournament would be expanded to 94 games.

The governing council has decided that for this year’s IPL, there are going to be two groups of 5 teams each. All teams will play against the other 4 teams of their group twice, one team of another group twice and the remaining 4 teams of another group once, which means all the 10 teams will still be playing 14 games each.

Also, in spite of the fact that the teams have been classified into two groups, the points table will be a single one for all teams and the teams occupying the top 4 positions in the table, irrespective of which group they are from, will qualify to the playoffs.

The format of the playoffs remains the same, as the top 2 teams will face each other in qualifier one and while the winner qualifies to the final, the losing team gets another chance against the winner of the eliminator which will take place between the third and the fourth-placed team.

A lot of fans are finding the new IPL format very complicated and confusing

The new IPL format might seem complicated to a few fans and it is indeed a bit complicated, but IPL has already taken place in the same format once before, about a decade back, when two new teams from Pune and Kochi were introduced. It is believed that this format is in place just for one season.

From the next season onwards, the schedule will be expanded and the teams will be back playing to every other team twice, which means all 10 teams will play 18 games each. Here is how people reacted on Twitter after the new IPL format was announced today –
