The Indian cricket team kicked off their home T20I series against the Sri Lankan cricket team in style with a 62-run win at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Rohit Sharma lost the toss and received an invitation to bat first from the Sri Lankan cricket team skipper Dasun Shanaka.

Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided an excellent start to the home team with a 111-run opening partnership. Kishan played the aggressor’s role and scored 89 runs off 56 deliveries, whereas Sharma aggregated 44 runs off 32 balls.

Shreyas Iyer came out to bat at number three in Virat Kohli’s absence and smashed a quickfire half-century. His 28-ball 57 powered the Indian cricket team to a 199-run total in 20 overs. Chasing 200 to win, Sri Lanka ended with 137/6 in 20 overs and lost by 62 runs.

Courtesy of yesterday’s result, Rohit Sharma now holds the record for the most consecutive wins by an Indian captain again. He broke his own record with the 13th consecutive victory last night. Previously, the Indian team won 12 matches each under Rohit and Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

We are dropping the lollies, It’s not expected at this level: Rohit Sharma

In an interview after the match, captain Rohit said that there is one area where the Indian cricket team needs to improve, and that is fielding. Sharma highlighted how the Indian fielders have dropped some easy catches in the recently-played games.

“We are dropping the lollies, It’s not expected at this level. Our fielding coach has some work to do. Come Australia, we want to be the best fielding side. We can’t afford to keep doing this,” said Sharma.
The remaining two T20Is of the T20I series between the Indian cricket team and the Sri Lankan cricket team will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
