The former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd doesn’t think that not winning the World Cup will have any sort of impact on Virat Kohli’s legacy as the T20I captain of India.
Virat resigned as India’s T20I captain after T20 World Cup 2021 where India couldn’t advance to the knockout round. It was the only T20 World Cup where Virat captained the Indian team and despite having a brilliant record in the bilateral T20 internationals in Virat’s era, the men in blue faltered in the main event.
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India won the bilateral T20I series in England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand which are the 4 toughest places to tour for any Asian side, even in white-ball cricket at times.
India won 32 out of 50 T20 internationals they played with Virat in charge, which gives Virat a winning percentage of 64 as captain. Some of the great T20 captains going around at the moment, whether in international or franchise cricket, don’t have a winning percentage as high as that.
“He (Virat) has done extremely well for India over the years. He probably didn’t win a World Cup, but that doesn’t make him a bad captain,” Clive Lloyd was quoted as saying by news9.
Talking about India’s consistency in achieving favourable results in the last few years, Lloyd said they are still among the top teams in the world in the shortest format of the game, it can’t change just because they didn’t get two results in their favour in the T20 World Cup.
West Indies won two ODI World Cups under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd
Clive Lloyd certainly knows a thing or two about winning the World Cups, as it was under his captaincy that West Indies won the first two ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979 respectively. Lloyd himself led from the front in the 1975 World Cup final with a whirlwind knock of 102 off just 85 balls.
Lloyd’s West Indies had actually made it to the final of the ODI World Cup the third time in a row in 1983, but they were beaten by Kapil Dev’s India in a historic game at Lord’s.
