The Kolkata Knight Riders have announced Shreyas Iyer as their new skipper ahead of the IPL 2022 season. The Kolkata-based franchise broke the bank to acquire Iyer’s services at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. They spent a whopping INR 12.25 crore to sign the former Delhi Capitals captain.
According to reports, Shreyas Iyer did not want to be retained by the Delhi Capitals because he wanted a leadership role. DC agreed and released him before the mega auction.
There were multiple teams hunting for a captain at the mega auction, and one of them were the Kolkata Knight Riders, who successfully signed Iyer.
While fans knew that Iyer would be the new captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the team management of the Kolkata-based franchise did not make an instant decision. They waited for a while and made the official announcement earlier today on social media.
The Knight Riders posted an edited picture of Iyer alongside the former captains of the Kolkata Knight Riders team, namely Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum, Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan.
Eoin Morgan was the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders team last year. Under his leadership, the Kolkata-based franchise made it to the final of the competition, where they ultimately lost to the Chennai Super Kings team.
However, the Knight Riders released Morgan before the mega auction because of his disappointing performances in the batting department. None of the franchises showed interest in Morgan at the IPL 2022 Auction as he went unsold.
