India’s bowling attack has three players—Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel—capable of restricting the opposition with perfect lines and lengths on the subcontinent and also contributing crucial runs at the bottom of the order. All three all-rounders contributed significantly to India’s 132-run win against Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Nagpur. After electing to bat first, Australia was bowled out for 177. Ashwin and Jadeja combined for eight wickets, with Ashwin taking the cake with figures of 5/47.

Ashwin gave the Australian batting lineup zero breathing room in the second innings. On the third day of the match, he took five wickets to help knock them out for 91 runs in 32.3 overs. This was his 31st five-wicket haul in Tests. Two of the wickets were taken by Jadeja, who helped him. In Australia’s second innings, the seasoned tandem bowled an impressive 24 of the required 32.3 overs.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, said that he struggled to pry the ball from Jadeja and Ashwin‘s hands in the second innings after his team’s massive three-day triumph, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Rohit Sharma said: “Jadeja was at 249 wickets, he was asking me the ball, Ashwin was at 4 wickets, he was asking me the ball – that is the challenge I am facing, these guys know milestones really well (big smile)”.

Fortunately for Rohit, Ashwin and Jadeja both accomplished their goals. The Indian captain has said that while picking which bowler to use against a certain batter, he takes the match-up into account.
