New Zealand produced a magnificent effort in the first Test against Sri Lanka as they pounded the visitors by 2 wickets to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. They also knocked out the Island nation out of the WTC final contention.
At first, it wasn’t a fruitful outing for them as they were outclassed for the first days as Sri Lanka displayed a staggering batting performance and posted a total of 355 runs on the board. They then came out all gun blazing and bowled well to put New Zealand under pressure.
Sri Lanka reduced New Zealand to 188/6 but thanks to Daryll Mitchell, who smashed a sensational century and bailed his side out of trouble. But Sri Lanka yet again fought hard and a superlative batting effort from Angelo Mathews (115) made sure that momentum gets tilted towards the visitors. They set the hosts a target of 285 runs to chase.
Rain too played its part but after that, it was all about Kane Williamson and his class with the bat. The right-hander came out all guns blazing and batted staggeringly well. He smashed an unbeaten century and made sure that he took his side home. The game went down the wire but Williamson held the fort and made sure that his side ends the game on a winning note.
