Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at Team India for their poor selection in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. He, in particular, criticised R Ashwin’s selection over Yuzvendra Chahal and said If they are going to depend on No.8 for their batting what does it tell you about top 7.
“I want Chahal to play,” Sunil Gavaskar bats for the inclusion of the leg-spinner in the Indian team
Although India has qualified for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, their selection has been in the talks, in particular, R Ashwin being preferred over Yuzvendra Chahal.
It’s fair to say that the off-spinner has been given nod ahead of Chahal because of his batting prowess. But that’s costing India as they are unable to pick wickets at regular intervals in the middle overs.
Following this many have raised calls to bring Yuzvendra Chahal back in the side in place of Ashwin. They feel that the leg-spinner could be the game-changer for India in the middle overs. Notably, the off-spinner has managed 6 wickets in the tournament so far.
Last year, Selector left out Yuzi in T20I World Cup. This year, they picked him but yet to play his first match.
Other days in bilateral: Yuzvendra Chahal is world’s best leg spinner.

Sunil Gavaskar also has expressed his disappointment with the Indian selection. Raising calls to bring Chahal on the side, he said that if India is dependent on Ashwin as a batter then what are the top 7 batsmen doing? Speaking to India today, he said:
“If you are going to depend on No.8 what does it tell you about your top 7 then? Is the management saying that they don’t have confidence in their top 7 in a 20-overs game? I can understand a 50-over game, you look to have a bot more batting depth, but in 20-over game if you think your top 7 is not going to bat for the entire 20 overs and get you enough runs then I don’t know.
“At the end of the day, they know their oppositions and have their strategies down. I want Chahal to play against Netherlands as well and now as well. But then not having played a match here and been thrown suddenly in the deep end isn’t fair.”
If you are picking somebody because he can bat at that position that’s not the way you should be looking at – Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar added that if Ashwin is only picked as a bowler who can bat then it lowers the confidence of the 7 batters. He went on to say:
“If you think that you need a No.8 in a 20-overs game then doesn’t really show much confidence in your top 7. Yes I know the batting has not quiet…apart from Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya to an extent and KL Rahul in the previous game, it hasn’t really clicked. But at No.8, if you are picking somebody because he can bat at that position that’s not the way you should be looking at.”
India will now face England in the semi-final 2 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide on 9th November. It remains to be seen if they will bring Yuzvendra Chahal into the side or not.
Both semi-finals are on pitches that will assist spinners. India have the opportunity to play Yuzvendra chahal vs Zimbabwe in case they need him to play in Adelaide or Sydney @News18India @JhulanG10 #missionmelbourne #T20WorldCup #ICCT20WorldCup2022 #PAKvBAN #INDvsZIM
