“I can’t let him play in my team”, Aakash Chopra picks his top 5 T20 batters in 2022; leaves out Babar Azam

Virat Kohli‘s unbelievable comeback in 2022 was one of cricket’s most memorable moments. Before the Asia Cup in 2022, the former India captain struggled. As his normal nature, he was a run machine, thus the fact that he had gone 1020 days without scoring a century on the international stage was odd.

With his 71st century, he broke the century drought in the Asia Cup 2022’s super four-round match against Afghanistan. Since then, the ace batter has been unstoppable, scoring 296 runs in six matches at an amazing average of 98.66 to finish as the tournament’s leading run-getter in the T20 World Cup 2022.

By the end of 2022, Kohli had scored more runs for India in T20 internationals than any other player and was ranked sixth on the list of the most runs in one-day internationals for India in the year.

Aakash Chopra, a former India opener, has praised Kohli’s rise from mediocrity to greatness. Chopra ranked Kohli as the third-best T20I batter of 2022 on his YouTube channel. Based on 2022 statistics and his personal evaluation, he pegged Suryakumar Yadav of India, Mohammad Rizwan of Pakistan, Virat Kohli of India, Sikander Raza of Zimbabwe, and Devon Conway of New Zealand as the best five batters. Chopra heaped respect on Kohli, pointing out his remarkable stats and exploits under the challenging circumstances of the year 2022.

Babar Azam scored the fifth-most runs in Twenty20 Internationals in 2022, but Chopra did not place him in the top five. He also explained the thinking behind it to the audience.

“Virat Kohli’s name wouldn’t have been on this list if it had been made by anyone else. He had a hard time getting in shape for years, and his IPL performances were also not very good. He was having a terrible time”, said Chopra.

“But by the end of 2022, he had done a remarkable job of turning things around. Kohli has made 781 runs in 20 T20Is this year, with an average of 55.78 and a strike rate of 138.23. During the T20 World Cup, he did a great job. During the World Cup, the pitches against Pakistan and England were pretty hard, but he was still able to score,” he added.

“Based on the numbers, Babar Azam should be No. 5, but he’s not on my list. In 26 games, he has scored 735 runs, but his average is only 32 and his strike rate is only 123. I’m sorry, but I can’t let him play on my team. Instead of his name, I’m putting Devon Conway’s name there. Conway’s numbers in T20Is in 2022 are incredible. If he had played more T20Is this year, he would have passed SKY (Suryakumar Yadav) to take the top spot,” said Chopra.
