R Sridhar’s book ‘COACHING BEYOND: My Days with the Indian Cricket Team’ has spilt a few interesting details about Team India. He also talked a lot about MS Dhoni. On that note, here, we take a look as R Sridhar‘s book reveals an interesting detail about MS Dhoni‘s retirement involving Rishabh Pant.
R Sridhar’s book talks about MS Dhoni’s retirement
MS Dhoni’s last game for India was the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. However, it was only a year later that MSD announced his retirement. Till then, there was suspense if Dhoni would return to Team India.
However, based on R Sridhar’s book, the decision to retire was taken even before the semis ended. When Rishabh Pant asked MS Dhoni at the breakfast if the veteran would travel privately to London, MS replied that he would not want to miss the last bus drive with the team. This was a clear indication of his plans and Pant was the first to hear about it.

Pant has been the closest to being MS Dhoni’s successor
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant had been regarded as MS Dhoni’s successor and he has come very close to being that. Teams such as Australia and Sri Lanka struggled to replace their legendary wicket-keepers like Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara. However, for India, there has not been much of an issue.
While in Tests, Pant has been excellent, in the other formats, India has options like Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and KL Rahul. However, Pant has emulated a role which MS Dhoni was doing and hence, many talk about him being the next MSD. Currently, Pant is injured due to an accident. He would be out of action for a while. The fans will hope that he recovers soon. He is set to return to the field by six months.
