“I don’t want any senior non-performing player in the T20 team anymore,” Virender Sehwag doesn’t mince his words as he expresses displeasure on India’s performance in T20 World Cup

The former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has said that the senior players of the Indian team should bear the brunt of the semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. According to Sehwag, who was speaking on Cricbuzz, no senior player, who didn’t perform in the World Cup, should be an automatic pick going forward.

In the T20 World Cup 2022, Virat Kohli was the only senior Indian player who was consistent and scored runs. The captain Rohit Sharma struggled throughout the tournament and although KL Rahul didn’t look as out of sorts as Rohit, he took too much time at the top of the order and slowed down India’s powerplay game in the process.

Even Virat Kohli, after playing a knock of a lifetime against Pakistan, has come for a bit of criticism because his strike rate in the semi-final game against England was not that high. The former Indian captain scored a half-century off 40 balls and although Hardik Pandya provided a much-needed acceleration at the end, India could only get to 168.

The seniority of players shouldn’t make them automatic picks: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, while analyzing India’s performance in the tournament, didn’t take anyone’s name, but he stressed that the seniority of the players shouldn’t earn them a place in the shortest format of the game anymore.

Even the Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, after the semi-final, said that India now has 2 years to build for the next T20 World Cup and the decisions will be taken from a long-term point of view. But Dravid didn’t give any clear hints on the future of Virat and Rohit.

There are reports that BCCI will meet both the senior players of the team, Rohit and Virat, along with the head coach Rahul Dravid and they will reach a conclusion in that meeting as to how India wants to proceed further in the shortest format of the game.
