Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket operations at Rajasthan Royals, has said that he doesn’t think anyone ever in the history of the IPL has batted as well as Jos Buttler has batted for Rajasthan Royals this season.
Jos Buttler has scored 824 runs in 16 games for Rajasthan Royals this season and while it appears like a huge tally of runs and it indeed is a huge tally, Buttler is still at no. 3 in the list of leading run-scorers in a single season of the IPL.
It’s the former Indian captain Virat Kohli who tops that list, as he had scored 973 runs in a single IPL season of 2016. In that very same season, David Warner, who was the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at that time, had scored 848 runs as well and he is at no. 2 on the list.
Virat Kohli’s RCB and David Warner’s SRH had faced each other in the final of IPL 2016 where SRH had emerged victorious, but these two skippers were in the form of their lives during that particular IPL season and were hugely responsible for dragging their respective teams through to the final.
Jos Buttler has consistently been a heavy run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals this IPL season
Jos Buttler has been doing the same for Rajasthan Royals this year that Kohli and Warner had done for RCB and SRH respectively in 2016. Buttler might not be the captain of Rajasthan Royals, but his batting at the top of the order is one of the main reasons why Rajasthan Royals are back in the final of the IPL after 14 long years.
According to Sangakkara, the batting of Jos Buttler during the ongoing season of the IPL has just been on another level and he doesn’t think anyone has batted at that level ever before in the tournament.
Sangakkara reckons the biggest strength of Jos Buttler is the fact that he might be batting on 30 off 30 balls, but all of a sudden, he can switch gears and convert a 30-ball 30 into a 50-ball 90.
