5 Indian cricketers who might never play Ranji Trophy again

Share the post

In the past, we have seen the likes of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar play in the Ranji Trophy even when they were close to retirement. However, times have changed now. Workload is a sensitive topic and it is very much related to fitness. At the same time, state associations have their own projects. Considering a variety of factors, a few players may not play in the Ranji Trophy again. Here, we take a look at the list of five Indian cricketers who might never play Ranji Trophy again.

1) Virat Kohli

A few months ago, it would have made sense for Virat Kohli to play in the Ranji Trophy. However, he is back to form now and it makes sense to rest him rather than ask him to play a domestic game. He is probably in the last few years of his career and Virat Kohli might not find time for the tournament.

Also, DDCA has a lot of issues of its own. For Virat Kohli, it would be best not to get involved. If he does want to play, he could think of changing his state.

2) Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is one of the Indian cricketers who might never play Ranji Trophy again. It is a pride for any Mumbai cricketer to play in the Ranji Trophy. The most successful side in the history of the competition, the fanbase for the Mumbai Ranji Team is high.

Recently, we saw the likes of Ajinkya Rahane play in the competition after getting dropped. However, the same scenario will not repeat for Rohit. He is unlikely to get dropped from the Indian Team until retirement. Rohit also is injury-prone and it is better to avoid unnecessary workload in the hope of getting practice.

3) Jasprit Bumrah

Let alone the Ranji Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah may not even play for India in a few bilaterals. The team has already understood the impact of not having Bumrah in the team. This shall be the norm going forward.

Also, Bumrah hardly plays Tests in India. Hence, playing in the Ranji Trophy does not make the right sense for him. Yes, he is still under 30 but it may not be a far-fetched idea but Bumrah could consider retirement from the tournament.

4) Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya is also one of the Indian cricketers who might never play Ranji Trophy again. It appears that the management is unlikely to use Hardik Pandya in Tests. If that is the case, there is no reason why Hardik would want to play in the Ranji Trophy.

Unless Hardik himself wants to make a return to the Test setup, he might not participate in the tournament once more. Considering his injury-prone nature, this will be a good decision for the all-rounder.

5) Ravindra Jadeja

In recent years, Ravindra Jadeja has also become very injury-prone. It is important to keep him in good fitness, considering he is one of the important players in overseas Tests. Hence, he also surprisingly makes it to this list.

After the 2023 ODI World Cup, it needs to be seen if India will have him in the white-ball teams. However, considering his importance in Tests, Jaddu can have a seperate way of keeping his fitness.
