Shreyas Iyer was earlier ruled out of the three-match ODI series against the New Zealand cricket team owing to a stiff back. The right-handed batsman flew all the way to the National Cricket Academy to begin his recovery.
Recently, he didn’t get clearance after he was not fully fit. There has been no confirmation on whether or not Iyer will be back to play the first Test match against the Aussies, which is just less than a week away from getting underway.
The first Test of the four-match Test series will go all guns blazing on February 9 at VCA Stadium in Nagpur. If reports doing the rounds are to be believed, Shreyas Iyer is expected to miss out on the first Test.
On February 2, Thursday, he didn’t join the India squad for a preparatory camp in Nagpur. Once he gets fitness clearance at the NCA, he will be eligible to participate in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series. It is expected that Shreyas Iyer will be back in cricketing action for the second Test on February 17 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
Dinesh Karthik backs Suryakumar Yadav to play ahead of Shubman Gill for the first Test
Meanwhile, veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Dinesh Karthik has backed Suryakumar Yadav to play ahead of Shubman Gill for the Test opener against the Aussies, in case Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the first Test match.
Suryakumar Yadav who is named in the India squad for the first two Tests against the Aussies is expected to make his Test debut in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series. On the other hand, Shubman Gill has performed considerably well for India across all three formats.
Recently, he etched his name into the record books after he became the youngest cricketer to score a century in all three formats of the game. Gil has played 13 Tests so far, scoring 736 runs at an average of 32 including one century and four fifties to his name.

Look at the hate for sky in comments.
Dk is right Sky should play at 5 .
Gill has been playing as a opener for a long and he should continue to play as opener or sit out https://t.co/jp33W0cRpv— Fr🅾️nt F🅾️🅾️t 🦶 (@frontfoot73) February 3, 2023

Don't think that's going to happen. Shubman Gill has shown enough form to walk into the XI at No.5 if Shreyas misses out.
