Ruturaj Gaikwad came into the limelight after he won the Orange Cap title in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. He helped the Chennai Super Kings win their fourth championship by scoring the most runs by a single batter in that tournament. Gaikwad broke into the Indian cricket team in 2021 and made his debut against the Sri Lankan cricket team.
While Ruturaj Gaikwad has done well for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, he has not been able to perform well at the international level. In the recently concluded five-match T20I series between the Indian cricket team and the South African cricket team, Gaikwad played in all five games, but he scored only one fifty.
Speaking on his YouTube channel earlier today, Aakash Chopra opined that Gaikwad has frittered away his chance of making it to the plane to Australia for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Here’s what he had to say:
“There is a crowd there, there is no place for openers. A few believe that even Kohli can be made to open. Kohli opens for his franchise, so he can also open here. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan can open, how many people will open? Everyone wants to open. In one match, we had even gotten Rishabh Pant to open.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad will be keen to perform with better consistency against Ireland
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named in the Indian squad for the upcoming two-match T20I series against the Ireland cricket team. The right-handed batter will look forward to making the most out of that series.
If Gaikwad scores big in the two matches against the Ireland cricket team, he can have an outside chance of making it to the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. It will be interesting to see if he can make the cut to the Indian squad.
