Jos Buttler is trying to convince Ben Stokes to come back from his retirement to take part in the 2023 ODI World Cup. This is one of the interesting subplots as England prepares to announce the World Cup squad soon. If Stokes does return to the setup, it would mean the end of the World Cup dream for a cricketer. Since Stokes contributes in both departments, either a batter or a bowler could lose the chance. Here, we take a look at three players who might lose their spot in the World Cup squad if Ben Stokes withdraws retirement.
1) James Vince
James Vince has been utilized in the middle-order for a few games by England in the ODI squad. He might have fancied a chance in the squad but might miss out on it.
Vince is an experienced name and has done well against various attacks. If Ben Stokes comes back, it is certain that Vince will not be considered.
2) David Willey
David Willey is one of the players who might lose their spot in the World Cup squad if Ben Stokes withdraws retirement. Willey is good with the bat against spin. Hence, he might have been an option to operate in the middle-overs depending on the context.
Of course, his primary skill is with the ball. Ben Stokes offers superior skills with the bat and might bowl the same number of overs as Willey. Hence, the bowling all-rounder may not get his chance, especially with Sam Curran also in the fray.
3) Olly Stone
Olly Stone would have been an interesting selection if Jofra Archer is not completely fit. His ability to ply trade as a middle-overs enforcer would have been useful.
If Ben Stokes is in the squad, England cannot afford an extra pacer. Hence, the youngster’s name might not be discussed in the selection meeting.
