Young leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi got the opportunity to make his debut for India yesterday and he put on a match winning performance straightaway in his very first appearance for the senior national team. Although he got only a couple of wickets, but the way he controlled the middle overs for India, hardly conceding any boundary, it was remarkable for a bowler who was playing his first game.
Bishnoi has been on the radar of the Indian selectors for the last couple of IPL seasons now, but he was fourth in the pecking order behind the senior leggies Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Rahul Chahar. However, the selectors eventually picked Bishnoi for the ongoing T20I series against West Indies and in the very first go, he showed he has got the quality for the highest level of the game.
Ravi Bishnoi bowls flatter and quicker than classical leg spinners
What’s noticeable about Ravi Bishnoi is that he is not a classical leg spinner who fights the ball and tries to beat the batsman in the air. He is more like a modern day leggie, in the mould of Rashid Khan, who is flatter and quicker through the air. The ball skids on after pitching and it’s not easy to play him off the surface.
Also, Bishnoi bowls a lot of googlies, so countering him with a left handed batsman is not that easy either. It’s a move which West Indies tried yesterday by sending Akeal Hossein up the order, but it didn’t quite pay off.
With a man of the match award in his very first appearance for India, Ravi Bishnoi entered the elite club of Mohit Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, Navdeep Saini, Ishan Kishan and Harshal Patel who are the five other players to have been named the man of the match in their very first game for India.
Here is how twitter reacted after Bishnoi was named the man of the match in his very first senior international game –
Very impressive debut from Ravi Bishnoi. 17 dots in 24. The direction can get better (6 wides) but lots to like.
