Shane Warne, who left the world in shocking circumstances yesterday in Thailand, was not just one of the greatest cricketers of all time, he was also one of the biggest superstars of the game. Apart from his skill, the way Warne carried himself on and off the field and the way he got into the face of his opponents, it was a sight to behold for the spectators.

The former England captain Andrew Strauss narrated one of the stories where he had a bit of a confrontation with Shane Warne during one of the Ashes series at the start of his career. Strauss was a young top order batsman at that point of time and he had struggled against Shane Warne in that series. Warne had a lot to say to him when he was bowling, so he thought he would return the favor to the Australian legend when he himself came to bat.

When Warne came to bat, England left-arm spinner Ashley Giles was bowling and the ball was spinning a fair bit. Strauss recalled that he started sledging Warne telling him that he was struggling against Giles. To Strauss’s shock, Warne snapped back at him even while batting and told him, “Mate, there is only one guy struggling around here and that’s you”.

Narrating the story further, Strauss said that he continued to sledge Warne and an irritated Warne told him if he tried to sledge him one more time, he would hit the ball into the stands. Strauss challenged Warne to go ahead and do it if he could do it against Giles, with the ball spinning miles.

Strauss revealed that Warne actually went ahead and thumped Giles against the spin over the square leg boundary 15 rows back into the stands off the very next ball that was bowled to him. That, right there, was the end of Strauss’s sledging.
