Sanju Samson, a young batting prodigy in India, was named to the starting eleven for India’s opening One-Day International match against New Zealand in Auckland. The talented wicketkeeper-batsman, whose fans were left wondering about while watching the Indian team in the recently concluded T20I series, has finally gotten a game for the Indian team.
Before the T20 World Cup in Australia, Sanju Samson last played in an ODI series against South Africa. He showed off his exceptional batting prowess in the first ODI of that series, but he was benched for the rest of the series because Shreyas Iyer was favoured by the management.
The 28-year-old’s national team appearances have been inconsistent, despite his impressive performances when he has had the chance. The aggressive batsman has scored 294 runs for the Indian team in just 10 matches, with a batting average of 73.50. To the dismay of Indian cricket supporters, he has spent too much time on the bench and was thus expected to be promoted to the starting eleven.
Not only did Samson get his first major game action, but two promising young pace bowlers, Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh, also got their first crack in ODI’s. Both of them made their first appearances in the Twenty20 format this year, with the latter particularly shining in the just-concluded T20 World Cup and the Twenty20 International series against New Zealand.
The 28-year-old Sanju Samson scored 36 off 38 balls. He also has one new record under his name. Sanju Samson has hit the most sixes in ODIs this year for India.
Samson will definitely want to get more chances and solidify his position in the playing XI. With the ICC Cricket World Cup in 202 and T20 World Cup in 2024, Samson can turn out to be a vital cog in the Indian batting order.
