In the Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2022, Virat Kohli scored a century against Afghanistan, breaking his century drought in international cricket after almost three years. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Kohli opened the batting for India and recorded his first century in Twenty20 Internationals. He stayed undefeated with 122 runs off 61 balls as India amassed a total of 212 runs while only losing two wickets.
Kohli, who has opened the batting a few times in international cricket, hit six sixes throughout his innings and had a strike rate of 200. In addition to that, he kept the scoreboard moving by hitting 12 boundaries. The run total of the former captain of India was brought into the triple digits with a six-hit in the last over of the innings.
Since November 2019, Kohli has been unable to pass the 70-century mark, but he has now reached the 71-century mark at the highest level. Ricky Ponting ended his career with 71 tons, and Virat Kohli is just one century away from surpassing the Australian legend’s total.
In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli was given the responsibility of opening the batting order for the team. Within the first 12.4 overs of the innings, the opening partnership consisting of Kohli and skipper KL Rahul put 119 runs on the board for the first wicket. Suryakumar Yadav came to the crease when Rahul was taken out, but he was also removed shortly after striking a six on the first ball he faced.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease to bat at number 4, and he and the experienced player put up an 87-run partnership in seven overs.
Afghanistan has an uphill battle in the pursuit, and they may go home from the Super Four stage with zero victories to show for their efforts.
